Jean Carter, the nine-year-old daughter of the newly appointed headmaster Peter Carter and his wife Sally, is playing in the forest with her eleven-year-old friend Lucille when Jean discovers that she has lost her wallet with her "candy" money. Lucille tells her that she knows where to get sweets for free and leads her to an impressive mansion from which the owner Clarence Olderberry, an older, tall, emaciated man aged 70, watches girls from the window. That night, Jean, unable to sleep, tells his parents that Oldeberry forced her and Lucille to dance naked in front of him to get candy. Carter complains, but local chief of police Captain Hammond is skeptical of Jean's story and warns Carter that the Oldenberry family has put the city on the map and is far more in the community than the newcomer Carters. Oldenberry Jr. also tells Carter that he can be sure that Oldenberry's lawyers will show no mercy if he takes further action on the complaint. In the ...... Show more
